Wool Carpet Stains: Why Baking Soda and Vinegar Are Terrible Advice

Wool carpets are a stunning addition to any home. They are soft, durable, and natural. But they need special care, especially when it comes to stains. Unfortunately, a lot of online advice (mostly from overseas) is irrelavent to wool and also just plain wrong. Baking soda? Vinegar? Hot water? All can make your stain so much worse.

Why pH Matters

Wool is a protein fibre, much like human hair. Its fibres are highly sensitive to pH. Alkaline substances, like baking soda, can weaken the fibres and even discolour them. Acidic substances, like vinegar, can actually set stains, so if you spill red wine and pour vinegar on it, congratulations, you’ve just made that stain permanent.

What to Do Instead

  1. Act fast: The quicker you respond, the better.
  2. Blot, don’t rub: Use a white towel to lift as much of the spill as possible. Avoid coloured cloths as they can transfer dye.
  3. Use cold water only: Cold water helps prevent the stain from bonding with the wool fibres.
  4. Call a professional if unsure: Some stains like red wine, textas, make-up and other coloured inks need prompt specialist treatment to protect your carpet.

Bottom Line

When it comes to wool carpets, pH and temperature are everything. Forget baking soda and vinegar!! They do more harm than good. Stick to cold water and gentle blotting, and if the stain is tricky, let a professional handle it. Your wool carpet will thank you.
