Spring’s warmth has arrived. Unfortunately, so has the pollen.
Here in Orange and across the Central West we are lucky to be SURROUNDED by trees, flowers and rolling pastures full of grasses and crops.
But for a huge percentage of us (studies suggest 19.3% of the population), our beautiful vistas come with a host of uncomfortable allergies.
Pollen is the main cause of hay fever or seasonal allergic rhinitis. Flowering plants produce it but so do trees and grasses. And once the wind picks it up, it blows it far and wide.
There are some things you can do to help! Avoid going outdoors in windy conditions AND get your upholstery and carpets cleaned regularly! – We can help with that.
Live near pine trees? They are wind-pollinated and produce huge quantities between August and November.
These ‘dust clouds’ of pollen can be seen blowing from trees or settling in ponds and pools, leaving a distinctive yellow ‘smear’ on the water’s surface.
After the pines have released their pollen, it’s time for the Alder and Birch to have a crack! August to October, Alder tree pollen can cause hay fever and bronchial asthma, as does pollen from Plane trees. (Sampson Street Orange – We see you!)
From spring to summer, ryegrass wreaks havoc in NSW and spores are particularly prevalent during strong north-west winds following a run of clear, sunny days. Meanwhile, Paterson’s Curse is wind pollinated too and produces large amounts of pollen from September to January. These plants really hit us hard don’t they!?
